Dodgers Take Series From Cardinals But Drop Finale

The Dodgers took three of four from the Cards over the weekend, including a 17-4 blowout on Saturday that included three runs and seven RBIs from the red-hot Yasiel Puig.

“I feel good at the plate,” said Puig, further commenting on his pitch selection and keeping the ball off the ground, “God blessed me with these two games.” Puig crushed a total of five homers in two games Friday and Saturday.

The Dodgers won Thursday, took Friday’s night’s game 3-0, Saturday’s 17-4 but dropped Sunday’s matchup in what appeared to be another boom/bust situation after the rout the day before. Solid pitching from Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright and Cards reliever shut the Dodgers out, 5-0.

“I thought Wainwright was really good tonight” said Dodger’s manager Dave Roberts, “he was striking it and it had good bite,” referring to Wainwrights breaking ball.

The Dodger’s held first place alone for less than 24 hours as the Rockies beat the Giants in their series finale Sunday. The D-backs continue to slip from contention, dropping two of three from Houston over the weekend.

L.A. is currently ½ game back of Colorado and tied with St. Louis for the 2nd Wild Card spot.

The Dodgers face Colorado for three at home starting tonight, in what will be the most decisive matchup in the NL West this season with the number of games remaining.

Game time tonight is 7:10 pm, PST.

The Dodgers beat the Cards Thursday evening in St. Louis, despite allowing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after leading 8-1 in the top of the fourth.
