Hanley Ramirez And Dodgers Continue Negotiations

Prior to yesterday’s U.S. Opener in San Diego, Hanley Ramirez sat down with Enrique Rojas from ESPNDeportes. They discussed his health, his upcoming free agency and Yasiel Puig. I have loosely transcribed the audio version of the interview which you can find here. (Spanish)

Hanley was asked about being healthy for the first time in a long time to start the season, and what type of difference that can make on the field.

HR: Thank God he has given me the energy to get past all these injuries, I have gone through some tough situations, but just have to keep working.

Asked in regards to a recent survey on ESPN where he was among top vote-getters when fans named who they thought would be NL MVP this season.

HR: That shows me the fans are counting on me. We are working hard, concentrating on the game and I hope to show the fans that what they think of me is true.

This being the last year of his contract, and the amount of money that is being handed out, Ramirez figures to be the next big contract?

HR: I can’t control that, all I can do is help the team win. Guys like Trout and Cabrera are deserving of their deals, they help their teams in all aspects. Each player has his time.

How are contract negotiations going?

HR: No one knows, that is being taken care of by them. I don’t have a phone, I don’t know what they are discussing. I’m just going to play and try and stay healthy. I think we have an incredible team, It’s a great organization and I have been Blessed to be here.

So negotiations will continue in season?

HR: I don’t know what they are discussing, what has been discussed in Spring Training. Last time I spoke to them was last year when ownership said they would like me to stay here.

I ask because players say they don’t like negotiating in season.

HR: To each his own, for me is to play ball and concentrate on that. Now you can talk to my agent and see what he can tell you. I told him I don’t want to know anything. That is why I don’t know if they are talking or not. It is up to him to take care of it. What he thinks is reasonable. I just want the call to come in that says come take a physical tomorrow. Honestly I don’t know what is going on. I want to keep my mind on the game. Those are distractions I don’t want. My job is to help my team.

Asked in regards to Yasiel Puig and the media frenzy that has surrounded him.

HR: I don’t know what is going on with him because I’m not usually where he is at. I am doing my thing preparing for the game. He is a great person and talent. He is young and will mature.

So you guys don’t watch over him all the time like last year?

HR: Sure, during the game. He has to be ready to play. We give him advice on what he can do to improve his game, but when he is off the field everyone is on their own. Everyone is accountable for themselves.
